At the start of summer, by a green lake, Mother Duck sat patiently brooding her clutch of eggs in a grassy nest. One by one, the eggshells cracked open, and fluffy golden ducklings wiggled out. The largest egg hatched late, revealing a gray, long-legged hatchling that looked nothing like its siblings.

Page 2

Mother Duck still tucked the gray hatchling under her wing, leading all her ducklings down to the lake. The gray chick could swim very well, but all the animals in the yard stared and mocked him for being clumsy. The other little ducklings called him “ugly”, so he huddled into himself, wondering if being different was really his fault.

Page 3

As days passed, the teasing only made him sadder and sadder. Mother Duck defended her chick, but he hated that she had to argue nonstop to protect him. One early morning, he slipped away from the yard, creeping along the reed-lined shore to find a place he could live without being judged solely for his appearance.

Page 4

He came across a flock of wild ducks resting on a marsh. They shared their food with him and said anyone could stay, as long as they treated each other with respect. He was happy for a little while, but when the wild ducks flew south for the winter, he wasn’t yet strong enough to keep up with them, so he had to continue his journey alone.

Page 5

He took shelter in an old woman’s hut out on the farm, where he stayed with a cat and a hen. The old woman gave him a warm nest. The cat was proud he could catch mice, and the hen was proud she could lay eggs. When the gray chick told them he loved to swim under the wide open sky, neither of them understood, and they thought that hobby was completely useless.

Page 6

He thanked the old woman and went back to nature. Autumn had gilded the lake’s surface. One evening, he watched a flock of large white birds glide across the sky. They had long necks, powerful wings, and their calls echoed far into the distance. He didn’t know they were swans yet; he only felt an indescribable admiration swelling in his chest.

Page 7

Winter arrived, and the lake’s water froze solid. He had to paddle his feet to keep a small patch of water from freezing over entirely. When he collapsed from exhaustion, a farmer found him, brought him home, and warmed him up. The village children wanted to play with him, but their loud laughter scared him; he bumped into a broom and scurried back outside.

Page 8

He found a wind-blocked hollow in the reeds and survived the winter on leftover grass seeds. The long, cold days taught him he was far more resilient than he’d ever imagined. Instead of dwelling on the cruel words people had said, he learned to listen to the sound of the water, watch the flight paths of birds, and wait patiently for the sun to return.

Page 9

When spring came, he spread his wings and surprised himself by lifting high into the sky. The once-clumsy wings were now broad and strong. He glided over the farmland, spotting newly bloomed flowers and the lake’s surface, which shone like a mirror. In the distance, the same flock of white birds from the year before was swimming among the young willow branches.

Page 10

He landed near the flock, hopeful but terrified he would be chased away. The large swans swam gently over to greet him. He lowered his head to look at the water and froze: his reflection in the lake was no longer that of a scruffy gray hatchling, but a young swan with soft, pure white feathers.

Page 11

The swans explained that he had never been an ugly duckling at all. He was just a baby swan who grew up somewhere no one could recognize his true species. Even so, what the flock valued most about him wasn’t his white plumage was his unbroken, gentle spirit, which had stayed intact through his hard journey.

Page 12

The children by the lake cheered when they spotted the new swan. He no longer hid, but he also didn’t need their praise to know his own worth. He practiced flying with the flock, learned to find food, and helped the slower, less capable young birds. Whenever anyone fumbled or got lost, he waited patiently for them instead of mocking them.

Page 13

One day, he flew back to the old duck yard. His old siblings recognized him and felt ashamed of the things they’d once said. He told them that cruel teasing could stay with a person for a very long time, then accepted their sincere apology. Mother Duck hugged her chick with joy, and the whole yard agreed never to use hurtful nicknames for anyone again.

Page 14

The young swan continued to live with his flock by the lake, but he often visited Mother Duck often. He was grateful to everyone who had ever given him shelter, and he remembered the lonely period of solitude that had forged his strength. Now, he had a family that understood him, and many friends who cherished his differences.

Page 15

Every person has their own unique worth, and they are never defined by what others say about them. Always show empathy for those who are different, and be patient and kind to yourself when you haven’t yet found the place where you belong.
