Long, long ago, there was a young man in the mortal world named Niulang, who made his living raising cattle and growing rice. He worked from sunrise to sunset every day without fail.

Page 2

He was gentle and hardworking, but living alone left him often feeling lonely. He would treat the old ox that lived with him like family, pouring out all his worries to it.

Page 3

High up in the Heavenly Realm, there was a celestial maiden named Zhinv. Her hands were incredibly skillful, and every day she wove gorgeous, colorful clouds that painted the skies for sunrise and sunset.

Page 4

But day after day, the life spent tending her loom grew monotonous. Zhinv would often pause her shuttle, peer down through the clouds at the mortal world, and wish she could decide her own path in life.

Page 5

That year, when the weather turned warm and flowers bloomed, the celestial maidens were granted permission to descend to the mortal world to admire the flowers. As Zhinv strolled along the banks of a clear river, she spotted a young man fixing a kite for a child—it was Niulang.

Page 6

The two struck up a conversation naturally, talking about the rippling rice waves in the fields and the clouds in the sky, growing more and more fond of each other's company. Before they parted, they laughed and made plans to meet again.

Page 7

Zhinv submitted a request to the Heavenly Realm to stay in the mortal world. Niulang fully respected her choice, and as the two grew to know each other better, they were married with the blessings of every villager in their village.

Page 8

Their life after marriage was peaceful and wonderful. Niulang went to work in the fields every day, while Zhinv wove cloth at home, and she even eagerly taught the village children how to mix colors to make beautiful fabrics.

Page 9

Before long, they welcomed two lovely children. The couple shared household chores and cared for the old ox together. Their thatched cottage was simple, but it was always filled with the scent of home-cooked meals and the sound of their singing.

Page 10

Yet this happiness did not last. The Queen Mother of the Heavenly Realm discovered that Zhinv had been gone for too long, and the clouds in the sky had lost all their vibrancy. Without asking for any explanation, she ordered that Zhinv be brought back to the Heavenly Realm immediately.

Page 11

Heavenly soldiers suddenly descended to the mortal world and seized Zhinv. She said she was willing to keep weaving clouds, but she would never leave her family. In a rage, the Queen Mother drew a line that became the Silver River, splitting the family apart on opposite banks.

Page 12

Seeing Niulang's grief, the old ox took out the oxhide it had shed naturally years earlier, and told Niulang that wearing it would let him fly. Niulang put on the oxhide, took his children, and flew all the way to the banks of the Silver River.

Page 13

Worried that the river's waters were too dangerous to cross, Niulang did not force his way across. The father and his two children stood on the bank, lighting one warm lantern after another to let Zhinv on the opposite shore know they were safe.

Page 14

Their deep love and longing moved the magpies living nearby. Flocks of magpies flew in from all directions, flapping their wings to build a bridge across the Silver River.

Page 15

Before long, a soft bridge made of the magpies' wings stretched across the Silver River. Niulang held his children as he stepped onto the bridge, and finally wrapped Zhinv in a tight hug when he reached her side.

Page 16

The family began discussing a way to balance both Zhinv's duties and their family life. Watching them from afar, the Queen Mother suddenly realized that tearing them apart by force had never solved the problem of the faded clouds.

Page 17

Zhinv proposed that she could train the other celestial maidens to weave clouds, while Niulang would organize the villagers to send weather updates to the Heavenly Realm. The two sides reached an agreement, and no one would ever have to sacrifice their entire personal life for work again.

Page 18

From then on, every year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, the magpie bridge grows especially wide. On ordinary days, Zhinv brings woven cloud silks to the mortal world, and Niulang brings fresh harvested rice to the Heavenly Realm, as warm gestures of care for one another.

Page 19

Zhinv taught the other celestial maidens to weave, so she could accumulate long breaks to go home to her family. The Queen Mother also revised the Heavenly Realm's rigid old rules. Every summer, children gather under grape arbors to gaze up at the starry sky.

This story became the origin of the Qixi Festival. It teaches us that true love begins with mutual willingness, is nurtured by shared responsibility, and when people learn to listen, support, and respect one another, even outdated rules can step aside for sincere hearts.
